Treat grip and wrist control as related but different jobs, then train carrying, palm-up flexion, and palm-down extension with one backpack.
Finger and wrist flexor compartment — The soft mass on the palm side, starting at the inner point of the elbow. Its long tendons run through the wrist to every finger.
Finger and wrist extensor compartment — The back of the forearm, from the bony bump on the outside of the elbow to the back of the hand.
Pronators and supinators — Short and deep, crossing between the two forearm bones near the elbow and again near the wrist.
Brachioradialis — The cord that stands out on the thumb side when you lift something with the thumb pointing up.
Closes and holds the grip
Make a hard fist and wrap your other hand around the top of that forearm, palm side. The mass that firms up is doing the gripping — the muscles that curl your fingers live in the forearm, not the hand.
Bends and straightens the wrist
Rest a forearm on a table, palm down, and lift only the back of the hand. What tightens along the top of the forearm is the extensor side — noticeably smaller than the flexor mass underneath it.
Turns the palm up and down
Tuck an elbow to your side and roll the palm from down to up. The movement happens along the forearm, not at the wrist: the two forearm bones are crossing over each other.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need forearm work if I already row and carry?
Those already train the grip hard. What they hold still is the wrist — a row asks the hand to stay closed, not to bend. Direct wrist flexion and extension add the motion the bigger exercises leave out, and they let you keep training the forearm on a day when your back gives out first. Add them if wrist strength or forearm size is a goal of its own; skip them otherwise.
Does grip strength predict health?
It predicts, which is not the same as it causing. In a large international cohort, grip strength was a stronger predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality than systolic blood pressure.[1] That does not mean training grip produces those outcomes, and grip is a poor stand-in for how strong the rest of you is — measured strength elsewhere in the body tracks it loosely at best.[2] Train grip because carrying and pulling need it.
Why are reverse wrist curls so much lighter?
Because the extensor compartment is genuinely smaller, with different leverage at the wrist. Using perhaps a third of the weight is the expected result, not a sign you are neglecting something. Matching the load in both directions is the actual mistake: it usually means the palm-up version is too light, the palm-down version is irritating, or both.
What should my wrist do while carrying?
Almost nothing. It stays near neutral while the fingers stop the load from opening the hand; if the wrist folds, a carry quietly becomes a badly loaded wrist curl. Direct wrist work reverses the rule — there you plant the forearm and deliberately let the hand travel through a small comfortable arc. Keep the wrist quiet when the body moves, and let it move when the body is still.
One common mistake
• Letting a heavy backpack drag the wrist into an uncontrolled end position.
• That turns grip work into repeated tendon irritation.
• Secure the handle, keep wrist motion deliberate, and accept that reverse curls need far less load than carries or palm-up curls.
What's normal
A deep cramping fullness that arrives quickly and leaves quickly — grip usually fails before the muscle feels sore at all. Fingers that are stiff the next morning and loosen within a few minutes of using them.
